Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)
Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) is a serious complication in children with insulin-dependent diabetes. Understanding the pathophysiology that underlies the severe metabolic derangements is the key to successful treatment without adverse effects. I developed this protocol to enable seamless throughput from the emergency department to the ICU. With full implementation, we reduced the time to resolution of acidosis and shortened ICU length of stay.
MEDICAL EDUCATION & ADMINISTRATION COLLATERALS
Asthma attacks can be lethal, especially in adolescents who wait until their symptoms are severe and their inhalers no longer help before alerting their caregivers. In some cases, they may lead to cardiopulmonary arrest. This clinical pathway used general anesthesia to treat severe, refractory asthma. After provider training and several practice sessions, the protocol was implemented with dramatic results and no observable side effects.
